1993 - 2 Neck Through Body with reverse moon & stars inlays made for Kirk Hammett
#1st Ouija ever made for Kirk have this characteristics:
- Front of headstock: "ESP" standard logo, full "Kirk Hammett" signature logo, string retainer removed;
- Back of headstock: Serial: 443201 + "ESP Custom Guitars" black circle logo;
- Fretboard: reverse "moon & Star" inlays, 2 stars at 24th fret, Extra Jumbo Frets;
- Body: 2 spelling errors on the text: "WILLIAM FUED TALKING BAARD SET” (instead of “WILLIAM FULD TALKIN BOARD SET”), Glow in the dark paint (the only Ouija ever made that glow in the dark, and still glow!), some little details of the graphic different than post-regular productions, equipped with a couple of EMG 81, the volume knob is placed on top of "1" (and "2" partially).

This guitar was sold the June 25, 2001 to "Darth Flex", and was also signed by Kirk with some notes in the back mentioning this was one of his main tour guitars as well as used for recording in several albums. Heartfelt thanks to "Darth Flex" for having clarified many unknown aspects of this guitar and sending me some clarifying photographs.

On Sunday, April 25, 2021 was auctioned on gottahaverockandroll.com and sold for $225000. This is the description made: Kirk Hammett's number one glow in the dark Oujia Board Guitar. It was around 1990 that Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett first approached ESP with the idea of a guitar that made use of graphic elements from Hasbro’s classic Ouija® mystical board game. Back then, before the age of digital cameras and internet communication, creating a guitar like this took some ingenuity. They got a Ouija® board, and used a combination of a copy machine and a pair of scissors to properly position the art elements on the guitar’s body. ESP faxed the result to their ESP Custom Shop in Japan, and the rest is history: the Ouija™ guitar became one of the most well-known and coveted signature models in ESP history. This very guitar was Hammett's number one instrument throughout the 1990s. He played and used this guitar on stage frequently. The guitar was used extensively for the albums: "Load", "Reload", "Garage Inc.", "The Black Album" and "S&M". This can be considered one of the most important guitars in the history of metal music. This guitar came directly from Kirk Hammett, with photographs of Hammett presenting the guitar to the current owner. Additional photographs of Hammett writing the history of the guitar on the back of the instrument are also included. The guitar comes with one of Kirk's stage used guitar straps that he signed as well as the original touring guitar case. The value of this guitar cannot be understated as this is the most important Metallica guitar to ever surface in public auction. The guitar is in very good condition. The guitar comes with photographs of Hammett presenting the guitar to the current owner, the signed stage used guitar strap and the original touring case. Also comes with a Gotta Have Rock & Roll Certificate of Authenticity.

The #2nd Ouija ever made was given to Kirk not long ago after #1. I don't know if this guitar is still in the hands of Kirk, but was used onstage till 2009.
It has almost the same characteristics as the #1, except for:
- little smaller and less closed moons inlays;
- no spelling errors on the body and no glow in the dark paint;
- volume knob is placed down and left to the “1” in the graphic, instead of on top of it;
- lower frets (medium jumbo?);
- equipped with EMG 89 at the neck instead of 81.

This guitar was widely used in the 2000s tours and is easy to recognize also because it has a large dent in the edge just below the "GOOD" sign.





1993 - [3] Neck Through Body custom orders with reverse moon & stars inlays
The #3rd Ouija ever made was custom order for some “big boy” at ESP, then later was given to Armand Crump (Kerry King's guitar tech dead in 2012), then sold to a couple more owners and now is property of Rick of SteelEdgeGuitars. It has almost the same characteristics of the #2 except for these:
- "KH" signature logo instead of "Kirk Hammett" full logo in front of the headstock;
- nothing on the back of headstock (no serial or ESP circle logo);
- different paint transition from body to neck.

Rumors tells that two more neck thru Ouijas were made in 1993, but at today nothing have been found yet. So the #4 and the #5 are considered lost or missing or, maybe, never producted at all.

Correct islamic flag inlays. Appears officially in the 1995 ESP catalog in "Custom Order" section. All of the first production ouija's were bolt ons. Production was healted due to infringment of the Parker Brothers board game graphics in 1998. (In the pics you can see my Ouija that was signed in the rear cover)

- notes: comes with ESP C.O.A. and ESP hardcase but many of them has lost his goods during years.
(ps. the signature on the back of my ouija is not a stantard feature!)

A custom order from ESP factory for an ESP Ouija in 1995 cost about $1900 in reality (thanks Brian D'Souza):
"I did have an original black ouija back in the 90's it was a custom shop order i placed in 1995 and received in 1996. It was neck thru body. I do not know the serial #. However, it had custom inlays. It had a crescent, but not like a crescent moon, more like a cat's eye, with a dot instead of the star and then turning to dots at the 12th fret. It had the glow in the dark paint but it never really glowed. I sold the guitar in either late 1998 or early 1999 to a player in the Chicago area (where I was living) via Harmony central. I believe I paid $1,895 for the guitar brand new as a custom shop order. Things were more affordable back then."

C.O.A. (Certificate Of Authenticity): many of them have lost the coa because at that time people don't care about that so much as today.



O.H.S.C. (Original Hard Shell Case): many of them does not have the ohsc because was sold separately and was not cheap.



2004 - 2 Neck Through Body with moon & stars inlays: 1 for Kirk Hammett and 1 for ESP "boss"
- Correct islamic flag inlays (The moons face is in the direction of the body, as the islamic flag);
- 1 star at the 24th fret;
- "KH" signature on the headstock;
- 6 digit serial number and ESP black circle logo on the back of the headstock.
Kirk start to use this one live in 2004, the other one was on sale on ebay in 2012.
